Expanded Learning Opportunities

Expanded Learning Opportunities (ELOs), for middle and high school students can help bridge the gap between the classroom and life beyond high school.

ELO’s may be implemented as part of programs conducted:

  • During the summer
  • Before school
  • After school
  • During school
  • During other out of school time

Programs for middle and high school students could involve a combination of activities  such as:

  • Participating in group or team  dynamics
  • Increasing academic outcomes
  • Job shadowing
  • Internships
  • College preparation programs
  • Learning critical–thinking skills
  • Refining social skills

ELOs provide young people with a wide variety of well supervised, outcome-based activities and programs that are purposely designed and conducted to promote learning and positive youth development before during and beyond the traditional school day. Click here to download an ELO Brochure.

Examples of Expanded Learning Opportunities in A New Day for Learning, a report from the Time, Learning, and Afterschool Task Force, include:

The Build San Francisco Institute gives students interested in careers in architecture and engineering real problems to work on at more than two dozen San Francisco firms during the half day program at the Institute.

Students at the Fremont Business Academy in Oakland , California, and throughout rural Alabama have lots in common. Their school day splits into afternoon and evening hours as they manage businesses for their communities, from tax help for residents to publishing local newspapers.

Citizen Schools of Boston operates a national network that involves 2,000 middle school students at 30 campus sites in hands-on learning afterschool with an adult mentor. The students’ experiences with real work sites and apprenticeships improve attendance, grades and career planning.
